How to fix your secondary Ringer In Teams

The Microsoft Teams client has a feature called “secondary ringer” that allows you to select the device you want Teams to play the ring notification through. This option is often unconfigured leading to missed calls.  Particularly when you have multiple audio devices connected to your computer. For example, you can plug your headset into your device, but set your speakers as the secondary ringer, so that you have the audio cue when you aren’t wearing at the device or wearing the headset.

Unconfigured, users often complain the secondary ringer doesn’t always work as intended and calls are missed.

Logout and Reset your Secondary Ringer

Log out of your Teams account and restart the Teams application, then reset your secondary ringer settings,

  1. Navigate to Devices, select Secondary ringer and select a different audio device, normally your device speakers or busylight.
  2. Have another user call you on Teams, answer the call, and then end it.
  3. Go back to the Secondary ringer and select the device you want to set as your secondary ringer. Check if the issue is gone.

Your Teams device setting,  may look different – these are mine with 2 showing my speakers and 3 showing my Poly headset.

Next check your Notifications setup and make sure that Play sound for incoming calls and notification is on/enabled

  1. Check that you haven’t muted all your notifications, whilst call & meetings should be excepted.
  2. Make sure that you’re not on Windows Do Not Disturb
  3. Check your options for the sound notifications are checked and as expected.

Update Teams

Check if there’s a newer Teams app version available and install it on your device. Maybe the secondary ringer glitch is actually a known issue, and Microsoft fixed it in a newer Teams update.

On the old v1 Teams client – Click on your profile picture and hit the Check for updates option. Restart your app, reboot your computer and check the results.

In the new v2 Teams client – it will show you an update button, as it should auto update.  You can check the version by going back to the setting menu and clicking the About Teams on the bottom left.
